Since Crikey doesn’t have the ability to host proper blogs yet, I thought I’d dust off this old thing and start using it again. Hello. 🙂

Little-Known Power Broker Emerges in Kremlin Scandals

    October 13, 1999

MOSCOW — The money laundering scandal at the Bank of New York, at first dismissed by Russian bankers and politicians as an overblown sensation manufactured in America, has now made its way into the middle of Russia’s own highly charged political scene.

In the process, a new figure has emerged from the shadows, touted by one side in a bitter power struggle here as the latest Rasputin figure to hold sway in the Kremlin. His name is Alexander Mamut, 39, a lawyer and banker who by his own admission is a friend and adviser to the inner circle around President Boris Yeltsin.

In the space of a week, the soft-spoken and boyish-looking Mamut has gone from being a little-known financier to being labeled as the Kremlin’s latest all-purpose power-broker, whom the Russian media has linked to a corporation charged with operating an illegal money transfer business through the Bank of New York.

The most graphic allegations were broadcast Sunday night in a television program that linked Mamut to Sobinbank, a Moscow bank recently raided by the police as part of the investigation here into several Bank of New York accounts.

“Sobinbank is just one unit of the laundering system,” said the reporter for the popular “Itogi” program.

“Its founder is Alexander Mamut,” the reporter went on. “He is a man of marked individuality in every respect. He is well acquainted with people from the president’s close circle.”
